Overview
Our nursery class at Nether Edge Primary School has a dedicated learning space for up to 30 children aged 3 and 4 years old. It provides the foundation for your child’s future learning. The nursery space offers a warm, caring and stimulating learning environment for our youngest children at the heart of our school.
Your child’s happiness and safety are our first concern. We know that when they are happy and safe, they learn. To do this the learning in nursery is expertly tailored to meet the needs of pre-school children while also being fully integrated into the daily life of our school.
Curriculum
The nursery curriculum delivers the learning outcomes set out in the EYFS in a way that is responsive to the needs of our children. There is a clear focus on building the foundational skills children will need for their future learning. This includes a strong emphasis on:
- Communication and early language
- Physical development
- Emotional regulation and social skills
- Early mathematical understanding
- Early literacy skills
- Readiness to learn
We use their play to motivate and engage children; to build their determination and resilience and inspire them to explore the world around them.
Our carefully planned curriculum is delivered through a balance of adult led experiences and high-quality play opportunities. It immerses children in stories and language so they become clear and confident communicators ready for school.
We value strong partnerships with parents and carers, working together to support each child’s learning and development.
Our learning environment
Our nursery class has its own dedicated spaces within the school building. They also make good use of shared school spaces like the main school yard and sports hall.
Indoors
The environment is carefully planned to offer children a wide range of carefully planned learning opportunities across all the areas of learning. Learning spaces are inviting and ignite children’s curiosity. Children can explore early mathematical concepts, refine their fine motor skills and develop their imaginations. There are quieter spaces for children to relax and look at books; messy spaces for sensory experiences and problem-solving opportunities.
Outdoors
Nursery has its own dedicated outdoor area including a decked area with cover so children can access fresh air what ever the weather. Promoting children’s physical development is a key part of our curriculum. Outside they are involved play that builds their strength, coordination, control and confidence.
Settling in
Children can start in our nursery class the term after they turn 3 years old. To support transitions we only start children at the beginning of a term (September, January and April). Before your child starts nursery the teacher will visit them at home and invite you to a stay and play in the classroom. Settling in sessions are planned with you to respond to your child’s needs.
Once you have applied to our nursery you will be invited to attend our stay and play sessions with your child once they have turned 2. These are for you and your child to come to together and are run by staff from nursery.
